In Latvian, the hoopoe is sometimes also called the “bada dzeguzi”. Ornithologist Edmunds Račinskis suggests that this name comes from the fact that hoopoes are mostly found in sandy coastal areas – from a farmer’s perspective, poorer lands where good harvests are unlikely, suitable mainly for grazing.
In Latvia, the hoopoe is relatively rare, as the country lies near the northern edge of its distribution range. Its presence is mainly concentrated in the coastal dune forests of the Baltic seaside lowlands and in garden areas around Riga. North of Latvia, the hoopoe breeds only in Estonia. In Lithuania, there are approximately 200–500 breeding pairs, in Latvia 100–300, and in Estonia 20–50 pairs.
The hoopoe is included in the Red Data Books of all Baltic countries, and its population is declining both in Latvia and across Europe.
