COFFEE BEANS – ĶEKATAS
As the winter solstice approaches, Kalve Coffee, in collaboration with the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design (DMDM), has introduced a special holiday espresso named “Ķekatas.” This limited-edition coffee not only offers a refined taste but also pays tribute to Latvian cultural heritage by featuring a motif from textile artist Anna Eltermane’s tapestry “Ķekatas in My Childhood Days” (1982) on its packaging.
Eltermane’s tapestry vividly portrays the traditional Latvian mumming ritual, where participants, disguised as animals like goats, roosters, rams, bears, and storks, move from house to house during the dark winter nights. This ritual, rich in symbolism, is believed to bring blessings and drive away evil spirits, reflecting the communal spirit and cultural significance of such traditions.
Anna Eltermane (1929–2009), born in Rucava—a region renowned for its deep-rooted folk art and seasonal customs—mastered weaving at the Liepāja School of Applied Arts. She furthered her studies at the Art Academy of Latvia, delving into graphics and scenography. After her academic pursuits, Eltermane returned to Liepāja, where she resumed weaving, drawing inspiration from nature and folklore. Her tapestries often depict the vibrancy of meadow flowers, rural life, and traditional celebrations, encapsulating the essence of Latvian cultural narratives.
